Mundur Krishnankutty had written more than 200 short stories and five novels and won many awards including the Odakkuzhal Puraskaram, Kerala Sahitya Akademi fellowship and the Cherukad Award for his short stories. He was also a known film and TV serial actor. He along with a group of youngsters of Mundur used to stage progressive plays in the late 1940s. Cherukad's `Tharavaditham,' `Manushyabandhangal,' etc., were some of the plays. This resulted in the establishment of the famous library Vivekanda at Mundur. He was instrumental in staging the popular drama `Aradimannu' which highlighted the pathetic condition of farm labourers, throughout Palakkad district. He wrote his first short story `Kannalichekkan' (Cow boy) in 1956. It was published in Navayugam, a progressive weekly edited by K. Damodaran. The same year another famous short story titled `Ambalavasikal' (Temple workers) was published in the Mathrubhumi weekly.

His stories are renowned for their realistic portrayal of life in Palakkad villages, focusing on the transformational crisis of an agrarian society.
 A teacher by profession, Krishnankutty portrayed various aspects of village schools in his stories.
