Pedro Paramo

Pedro Páramo is a short novel written by Juan Rulfo, originally published in 1955. In just the 23 FCE editions and reprintings, it had sold by November 1997 1,143,000 copies. Other editions in Mexico, Spain, and other nations have sold countless more copies. The story begins as Juan Preciado travels to Comala, the town his mother left after marrying Pedro Páramo who then stole all her lands and inheritance. Comala is deserted, home only to the ghosts of its former inhabitants. Through his interactions with the ghosts of the town, Juan Preciado reveals the history of Comala's demise.

 Pedro Páramo was published in 1955. The style of this short novel is a precursor of magic realism. Initially, it met with cool critical reception and sold only two thousand copies during the first four years. Later, however, the book became highly acclaimed and has had considerable influence on Latin American literature.
